The SAFE PLACES-pages promote a non-technocratic approach to safety.
They open sensible, smart knowledge and solutions.
And offer links to safe living, working, playing and being.

Ground Control
Anna Minton from London (UK) is a writer and journalist. SAFE PLACES want to recommend her great book 'Ground Control: Fear and happiness in the 21st century city', published by Penguin (June 2009). "...what makes Minton's account revelatory, is that the space in which the public meets to trade or just browse has itself been turned into a commodity and sold, and that this happened with so little consultation." (The Observer, Sunday 5 July 2009)

A Japanese Crash Course Guide to Bicycle Safety
Many cyclists are simply unaware that under Japan’s traffic law, bicycles along with carts, trailers, sleds, horses, and cattle are classed as light vehicles. Under the law, unless there is a designated lane light vehicles have to travel on the left-hand side of the road along with regular motor vehicles. In Nagoya many main roads have designated side strips for light vehicles and sidewalk cycle lanes are common. However, problems start to occur on small back roads when cyclists and motorists compete for road space.

1998-2008 - the 10th anniversary of Safe Places
The houses of Safe Places in Lego represent a basic feature of our professional view. The cute and clear Lego bricks mark our approach to safety probably better than any other material. Lego also relates to joy and beauty and the many fine colours of Lego create clear forms and images. We are proud to present our Lego houses as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Safe Places.

Shared Space
Traffic safety increases as road users' behaviour is affected by smart design of public realm, rather than by technical measures like speed bumps, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
See also the European project that "aims to develop new policies and new methods for an integral approach of the planning of public space for which man and his surroundings are taken as the basis."

Pieces of Art, or Violent Tags?
On a quite Sunday during the summer of 2006 we wandered through the historical centre of Bologna. Graffiti crossed our way everywhere and we asked ourselves if the townscape was ruled by pieces of art or by violent tags.

Jane thank you!
JANE JACOBS 1916-2006. She died April 25 in Toronto. SAFE PLACES still admire her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities!
"Ms. Jacobs's enormous achievement was to transcend her own withering critique of 20th-century urban planning and propose radically new principles for rebuilding cities."

Clean and safe worldwide
In just about every country of the world, local communities are engaging groups and teams of people to patrol the streets to help make them clean and safe. Each of the communities wants to know how others are forming these patrols and how they are going about these tasks. What works, what doesn't and why?

As beautiful as Venice
Carfree cities offer a solution to the vexing problem of the urban automobile while also providing a better quality of life, reduced energy consumption, and improved long-term sustainability.
